Ayam JC 's "BreadHead" finds luxury in simplicity.

If there's one artist who encapsulates intentional minimalism, it’s Ayam JC. The Buffalo native’s most recent offering, Breadhead, integrates his mantra-like rap style with bouts of self-reflection and ambitions for “Big Dough,” his standout single. The 3-piece EP, produced by longtime sonic architects Kage Durden and SG Retro, is riddled with thundering 808’s, synthy piano taps, and stark ad-libs; a staple aspect of JC’s shuttering sound and coded lyricism. The first track, titled “Rich,” encapsulates the rhymer’s haunting and ruthless journey to wealth. Lines like “Movies here get ugly…I got it because I want it/ Anything I want, next thing you know, I got that,” insinuate a yearning for leveling up, while still leaving much of his story to the imagination. With a diary-like approach, JC recounts moments of glory and angst on “I like it.” He makes it clear that his love for money is his biggest motivator, but doesn’t shy away from being introspective either. He leaves you wondering, is this work a Freudian slip? Or something more?
